Varsity Head Coach

Mitch McPherson

A native of Peoria, Illinois, Coach Mitch brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a championship pedigree to his new role as Head Coach. Known for his relentless work ethic and strong hockey IQ, his journey through the sport spans over a decade as both a standout player and emerging leader.

Coach Mitch's playing career began in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), where he appeared in over 200 games with the Texas Tornado and Amarillo Bulls. He was a key contributor to the Texas Tornado’s 2012 national championship run, establishing himself as a reliable two-way forward with a strong physical presence.

He went on to play NCAA Division III hockey at Hamline University in Minnesota, where he studied Criminal Justice. During his four-year collegiate career, he made both MIAC All-Rookie and All-Conference teams, demonstrating his impact on and off the ice.

Following college, he returned home to Peoria to play professionally with the Peoria Rivermen of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). Over five seasons with the Rivermen, he became a fan favorite and team leader, helping guide the club to two SPHL championships.

After retiring from professional hockey, McPherson transitioned into a career in carpentry while remaining connected to the game. He served as an assistant coach with the Grandview team during the 2024–25 season, where he quickly earned respect for his ability to communicate with players, develop young talent, and reinforce a strong team culture.

Now stepping into the role of Head Coach, Mitch brings a player-first mentality and a deep understanding of what it takes to win—both on the ice and in the locker room.
